What’s the capital of Switzerland?

Fun in Switzerland

After leaving Italy, I was off on a short train ride to Switzerland where my new couch surfing host would be picking me up. I was really excited to go to Switzerland as it was one if the countries I dreamt about as a young child living in Barbados, believing that I would one day live there even though at the time I had no idea where  it was or anyone who had been there, quite frankly I am not sure how I had even heard about it. However, here I was almost there and anxiously waiting to arrive. First off, the train station looked like an airport it was the nicest I had been to thus far on my travels, it had stores, cafes everything. I waited a few minutes and then my host arrived and let me know we would first be heading to a bar to meet up with his best friend who was also hosting two travelers but from Russia, so with luggage and all off we went to have some drinks not a bad way to start the night!

So I haven’t even told you where in Switzerland I went to, okay so most of us have heard of Zurich and Geneva but I was in Bern. I had never heard of that city and it just happens to be the actual capital of Switzerland with their old town being a UNESCO world heritage site! Who knew? It really is a beautiful and small place, I mean luckily my host and his friend were fantastic so that always has a huge impact on how you experience a place but the beauty of the city is undeniable. Oh so Bern means bear and in the city they have a section by the river that is enclosed and protected and is the home of a few bears! It is really something spectacular to watch and many people were there doing just that when I went.

Okay so what else did I do while there? I went to the rose garden which offers amazing views of the town and on a lovely day, like the one we had, many people go there to play and picnic with family and friends, then I had a harley ride through the city. Oh how could I forget, I went to dance lessons. So my hosts is a freestyle break dancer and during one of his breaks at work we went to his studio for a bit, put some music on and exchanged some moves. He taught me some break dancing and I turned on the reggae music, so later that night when we all went partying we got to practise our new skills, that was fun!

Heading back with Sam

One of the best moments for me was standing by the university looking across the city to snow capped mountains, something I had only previously seen in pictures. My breath was taken away, this is what I imagined of Switzerland. I really felt like this country is one enjoyed more thoroughly during the winter I can just imagine how amazing the landscape would be then, not to mention they are really big into Christmas, there were gorgeous and expensive decor  already adorning store windows. Speaking of expensive, that is another suitable adjective to describe Switzerland, and don’t think of going on a bus without your ticket as I did one day, because expensive will also describe the fine you will get. Mine was 100 Swiss francs that’s about $108, not cute! For a 2 franc ticket, but I had been out of local currency and was going to the center to exchange money, plus no one ever checks, until the day you don’t have one…naturally.

Bern University

I will definitely return to Switzerland I spent about 5 days there and I didn’t even make it out of Bern and there is so so much more to explore, but most importantly I had a great time with great people. When my host now friend Stefan was fooling around pretending to be me as he had seen a few of my videos I decided to record him so enjoy. Notice he is wearing my sunglasses lol too funny. Wish I caught his actual impersonation of me on camera! As usual will have more photos up on the Facebook page so go visit and Like the page if you haven’t yet, I like having you all close, not in like a creepy way…okay kinda!

Roaming around Romania

Cosmina and I at the fountain at Peles

So after a small recovery period from my longest bus ride to date it was time to see what this Romania place was all about. We first left for an area called Ploiest where we spent I believe 2 or 3 nights. We used the country’s new highway to get there (apparently a big deal) but there is just something about traveling along a highway while a few feet away on the side there is a horse drawn buggy also moving along quite comfortably and unphased. Anyway, so what was on the agenda?  Well Transylvania of course, yes I mean where Dracula is from!! Kind of cool huh?! Now I won’t bore you with the real history of Dracula’s Castle (Bran Castle) you can look that up on your own. But basically it is a place with rich history of different kings and queens that resided there and they do tell how the story or fable of Dracula actually came about. I was really excited to visit this place although to be honest it wasn’t as dramatic as I had hoped and no there were no sightings of Dracula, although I was there during the day. I mean everyone knows he sleeps during the day!

Foggy view of Bran castle from the restaurant

So prior to going to Bran we made a stop at Peles castle in the Carpathian mountains, another place that has deep roots in Romania’s history as it was sort of like a summer residence of Royals from what I understand. This place was lovely although we visited on the only day they were closed, so we were unable to see the interior but the lovely exterior and landscaping made up for that. The rest of the day was spent trying local food at a restaurant in the area with a clear view of Bran castle, then a stop at a really nice hotel for dessert. My sweet tooth was well satisfied, though rudely interrupted by the conversation I had to have with my bank making arrangements to cancel an reissue a new card. Later in the night we stopped in the cute town square of the city Brasov and had a few drinks before finally retiring for the night and commencing our 2 hour drive back home. I was kinda useless the two days following as I came down with a bit of a cold, not fun when traveling but I needed the rest.

After returning to Bucharest, my hosts nicely arranged a visit to the Palace of parliament (peoples house), Ceaucescu’s love child. One of the few places I noted that I definitely wanted to see while in Romania. Now this is the second largest building in the world second only to the pentagon. You cannot imagine the size of this place unfortunately we weren’t able to tour underground, which is assumed to be the same size as what lies above ground with many places there still undiscovered I have heard, but who really knows. This place is huge and over the top with meticulous architectural décor and details coming up at an approximate 12.7 Billion Euros. The tour was very strict you are not allowed to be anywhere in the building on your own and you must leave your passport or other government issued ID at the door and go through metal detectors before beginning. Oh and you have to pay to take pictures, which I did not, but I have taken many illegal photos for you guys before so this didn’t phase me (Gosh you guys have created a monster!). There are many many areas that are eliminated from the tour as that would take forever I imagine. We did however lose someone on the tour I thought that was funny.

Breaking News: Oh how could I forget? So while at Dracula’s castle, this guy asks me to take a picture questioning whether I knew how to use an DSLR while handing the camera over to me. Just point and snap right?! That was pretty much my response, sorry if that offends any of my photog friends. We end up in conversation when he asks where I am from and I find out he is Romanian but lives in Florida also, who woulda thunk it?! So he asks what I was doing in Romania and then invites me to visit the area where his family lives and gives me his info. I told him I absolutely would love to, although I am not sure he believed me at the time. Anyhow he very nicely leaves the invitation open letting me know he will be in Romania for a month. So what happened? Well, its a bit over a week later and I am writing this aboard the train heading on my way there.

2000 Meters High Or So

Moment with the mountains

In the last 3 days I have had some very interesting experiences. Firstly I spent the weekend in an area of Austria called Steinmark, in Styria sort of like a country side town. There I visited stables, attended a fetzen markt, which was basically a whatever-trash-you-have-and-dont-want affair where people stop by to look and hopefully purchase and across the street was a feuerwehrfest, a little beer garden event to raise money for the local fire service. Both very simple but nice and I’m told typical Austrian. However, the highlight of my time there, was the hike up of mountain in Veitsch.

Musicians at the feuerwwehrfest

In the winter this is a ski/snow boarding wonderland. It was actually pretty neat to see the ski lifts empty and motionless hanging above green, flowering terrain, with grazing cattle. It felt somewhat like an empty amusement park or an old beautiful house that was once inhabited but now left to harbour only memories and cobwebs. Now I thought it was just going to be leisurely walk up some hills and then back in no time, until I actually saw that this was a real mountain. This may sound silly to some but I live in Florida, the only hills we have are ant hills. So I was a bit daunted by the task at hand. Anyhow three or so more hours later  I found myself somewhere I could not have imagined…at the summit!

Ski resort in the summer

Playing with the cows (habit I guess)

I must let you know I was not a happy camper I kinda bitched and moaned a good lot of the way up. I was completely out of breath with aching muscles and just could not see how I could possibly go any further and this was about 10 minutes in! I realized how absolutely unfit I am but my cousin would not let me give up and just kept pushing me meanwhile her boys kept encouraging while she reinforced that they would not go on without me. She wanted us to make it to this hut they have high up where we could rest have a drink and snacks check out the view and then return to the bottom. Eventually, even though at one point I stopped to just lie down by some rocks, I did make it there. Thing is, this hut is below the summit but not by much really, couldn’t tell you exactly the distance, but once I got there I surprisingly heard myself ask them if we should continue to the top. We did.

Where I took a break

View on the way up

That was so cool and the view was spectacular. I learned that in life no matter how much of a loner you are, if you are willing and open there are many good people that will push you pass limits you never knew could be surpassed. This is a big deal for me because I am, as my aunt once said, too independent. I set goals for myself and do whatever I set my mind to and that’s all good and dandy but sometimes maybe our goals are based on what we think is possible or reachable not knowing that we could go so much further. As we descended I kept looking back up to the top astonished at how high up I made it and thinking that if I had been told originally that, that was where we were going I would have backed out immediately. How silly that would have been. Now this was no Kilimanjaro it is just under 2000 meters at its peak but while going up and once at the top I felt as if I was atop Mount Everest or higher!
